Rising Trends in Stair Design

One of the things I love most about my job is to see the progression of design in new construction. With the popularity of Houzz and Pinterest, it seems the days of "builder basic" in home design is declining. The expectations of home buyers are becoming much more specialized and those ideas are influencing home builders to offer a new set of standards.

Of course we love this because we are in the business of consulting on new construction, but it's also great to see the dynamics of social media at work in the design industry. It's so interesting to see a design trend on the rise on Pinterest and watch the influx of new product, DIY spin-offs, and room designs quickly follow.

We've seen barn doors, open shelving and shiplap like crazy! Great ideas and easy enough to implement in any home. So what's next? I have a little prediction. It's an element that can have a huge impact on a space. Whether you have a lot or just a few, simple changes can create a major wow factor. So get ready, I think we're going to see some big changes in STAIR DESIGN!

From simple to complex, check out these influential designs. There are alot of photos here, I just couldn't narrow it down, but there are 3 things I see trending:

BEFORE
AFTER

Designers love brass stair elements!

Curved and turned stairs get a new twist with flared entry steps, European influence, and a nice mix of metal, wood and stone. No more builder basics here. And you don't need a million dollar home to incorporate some of these ideas. There are plenty of ways to make a big style change with paint or a new runner.

What do you guys think about this? I guess we'll see if Home Depot starts selling different styles of stair balusters to gauge if my prediction is right. :)

Two Words: Carriage Doors

I have dream. Carriage doors.
Actually, dutch doors, or barn stall doors, just any of them- anywhere.
In any space, if you want to create a stunning ambiance, add some carriage doors to the mix and you have instant fabulous. I dream of having a gorgeous home on Nantucket, strolling out to feed baby animals, walking in super fun wellies, preppy shorts and stripes. While the hubs is watching football, I am dreaming about this...

The dog snuggles with little bunnies, yes he does.

I love the interiors at the Spotted Horse Tavern in Westport, Connecticut.
They used barn stall doors as a room divider
and knocked it out of the park with the vibe inside. You should go!
And, I should design their next restaurant- wink, wink.

Dutch door awesomeness

More barn stalls used in the interior. This is the now Gweneth Paltrow home, designed by Windsor Smith and I've mentioned before, my favorite house of all time. If you haven't checked it out- it's a must.

You know Gweneth probably has a baby giraffe running around. Why wouldn't she.

I would have at least 3 more Coton de Tulear pups...

Just a bunch of love.
